VIC:More than 180 arrested in Vic police blitz

MELBOURNE, Dec 4 AAP - More than 180 people were arrested in Victoria over the weekend
as part of an Australia- and New Zealand-wide police blitz on drunken violence.

Hundreds of police saturated Melbourne streets and regional centres, including Geelong
and Shepparton, for Operation Unite. Police patrolled in and around licensed venues, entertainment
precincts and public transport hubs.

As part of the blitz, police visited more than 800 pubs, clubs and bars throughout
Victoria and detected 44 licensing breaches.

According to preliminary figures for Operation Unite, across Victoria there were 158
drunk arrests and 26 arrests for assault.

Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said on Sunday that the operation had been a success overall.
